The pseudo-democratic election in Iran resulted in the defeat of a pseudo-oppositional candidate. The most aggressive and radical forces within the “Islamic republic” don’t even think about resigning power and have put off their pseudo-democratic mask.
A victory by Mousavi wouldn’t have changed the character of the Iranian regime but just adding a more friendly face. Achmadinejad’s victory revealed that those factions of the Iranian regime have prevailed, which reject any verbal thoughtfulness towards the West and any abstinence in suppressing their own citizens. The last four years stood for an aggressive appearance both on the international and domestic level, which reaches from empowering the Pasdaran within the Iranian political power structure, the organization of Holocaust-denial conferences, threats of annihilation against Israel up to the support of international terrorism.
Especially now it is most important to pressure the regime in Tehran with tough, comprehensive and consequent political and economic sanctions. But instead of supporting the international efforts to tighten sanctions, Austria is moving towards the opposite direction.
The Austrian chamber of commerce is planing an “Iran-seminar” at the end of this month to intensify business relationships with the Mullahs’ dictatorship. At the same time the first reactions of the European Union adumbrate that the Iranian “election” results could be acknowledged.
Support the fight of the secular and democratic opposition against the Iranian regime:
Demand from your government not to acknowledge this pseudo-election and to put tough sanctions in place!
Participate in solidarity rallies of the secular Iranian opposition in Europe!
Demand from the Austrian chambers of commerce to cancel its Iran-seminar and stop activities that would undermine the pressure against the regime in Tehran – and sign the open letter of STOP THE BOMB by sending an email to info@stopthebomb.net)!
OPEN LETTER:
NO TO THE SUPPORT OF THE IRANIAN REGIME BY THE AUSTRIAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE!
We sharply protest against the Iran seminar scheduled for the 23 and 24 June in Vienna whose purpose is to deepen economic ties with the Iranian regime. The Chamber sets again a wrong example as it already did earlier with its „exploration trip“ to Iran at the end of April.
There must not be any „business as usual“ with a regime that has suppressed its own population for 30 years, has killed ten thousands of its opponents and driven millions into exile, has murdered homosexuals and terrorized women, has repeatedly threatened Israel with annihilation and hosted conferences on holocaust denial. It is politically and economically short-sighted to believe in a normal relationship with a country that devotes the revenues from foreign trade for the funding of international terrorism and nuclear armament, both of them posing a threat for the whole Western world. Therefore, the Austrian economy and state should embrace their responsibility to set limits to the inhuman Iranian regime by imposing more consistent sanctions and refrain from doing further business even apart from already existing restrictions.
We call upon the Austrian Chamber of Commerce to cancel the Iran seminar and refrain from any further action that may undermine the efforts to put the regime in Tehran under pressure. We demand from those active in Austrian politics to get involved in the international efforts for tighter sanctions against the Iranian regime.
