We sharply protest against the Iran seminar scheduled for the 23 and 24 June in Vienna whose purpose is to deepen economic ties with the Iranian regime. The Chamber sets again a wrong example as it already did earlier with its „exploration trip“ to Iran at the end of April.
There must not be any „business as usual“ with a regime that has suppressed its own population for 30 years, has killed ten thousands of its opponents and driven millions into exile, has murdered homosexuals and terrorized women, has repeatedly threatened Israel with annihilation and hosted conferences on holocaust denial. It is politically and economically short-sighted to believe in a normal relationship with a country that devotes the revenues from foreign trade for the funding of international terrorism and nuclear armament, both of them posing a threat for the whole Western world. Therefore, the Austrian economy and state should embrace their responsibility to set limits to the inhuman Iranian regime by imposing more consistent sanctions and refrain from doing further business even apart from already existing restrictions.
We call upon the Austrian Chamber of Commerce to cancel the Iran seminar and refrain from any further action that may undermine the efforts to put the regime in Tehran under pressure. We demand from those active in Austrian politics to get involved in the international efforts for tighter sanctions against the Iranian regime.
