STOP THE BOMB demands support for protesters in Iran

Coalition criticizes complicity of Austria – demand for sanctions for human rights violations

The coalition STOP THE BOMB criticizes that Austrian politicians remains silent in regard of the courageous protests in Iran. The very least would be, like the Canadian government did, to announce support for the demonstrators and to clearly condemn the repression by the regime. Additionally, any human rights violation would have to be countered by tough sanctions against institutions and representatives of the regime.

Stephan Grigat, academic director of STOP THE BOMB, asks for the statements of Chancellor Kurz and Foreign Minister Kneissl: “The EU, seemingly paralyzed since the Nuclear Agreement with Tehran, may no longer let down the Iranian Freedom Movement. The Revolutionary Guards who have threatened the demonstrators with an ‘iron fist’, have to be added to the EU’s list of terrorist organizations. A fundamental turn in the Austrian and European policy towards Iran is needed: No support for the regime – all support for its secular opponents.”

After at least twelve people dead, Grigat demands explicit positioning and criticizes the Austrian business with Iran that enables the regime in Tehran to continue its brutal oppression: “So far it seems to be more important for the Austrian government as well as the opposition not to endanger the planned businesses worth millions of OMV, Voest, Oberbank and other companies with Iran by outspokenly criticizing the regime of the Ayatollahs. One needs to back up the anti-clerical protests against the Iranian Regime, in order not to fall accomplice with the rulers in Tehran.”
