While the Iranian regime is currently negotiating for getting closer to a nuclear bomb, it also found a promising way to boost the export of its Shia terror, which it has already been promoting for more than 30 years, under a new label: the "fight against terror". Given the confrontation with the "Islamic State", the "Islamic Republic" has successfully reshaped its image in the international and regional arenas. The U.S. have a de facto cooperation with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in the fight against ISIS.
The lecture will highlight the role of the Iranian rulers both in the destabilization of Iraq and the strengthening of Sunni Islamists. Which role has the Iranian alliance with Assad? What consequences will the cooperation in fighting ISIS have for the conflict over the Iranian nuclear program? And what does the Western policy of appeasement and cooperation with the ayatollahs mean for the Iranian opposition and dissidents in other countries of the region?
Thomas von der Osten-Sacken is the CEO of WADI, an NGO for crisis assistance and solidary development cooperation mainly active in North Iraq. He is an editor and author of books on Iran and Iraq and regularly writes for German newspapers like Die Welt or Jungle World.
