Anti-Semitic "Quds-Day": Islamists to march in Vienna on Saturday, counter-protests announced

Mayor Häupl, Interior Minister Sobotka mum on annual anti-Semitic hate demonstration

So called "Quds Day", which is held by the Iranian regime and its followers worldwide at the end of Ramadan, is set to take place in central Vienna on Saturday. Like every year, a gender-segregated Islamist demonstration will call for the destruction of Israel. Just as in 2015, the “Quds Day” organizers again spread anti-Semitic postings on their Facebook page. This time they claim Israel was behind the rise of the "Islamic State". Last year, a Quds-March participant bluntly told Austrian state broadcaster ORF she supported Israel’s annihilation. Austria’s Ministry of the Interior confirmed the presence of Hezbollah and jihad flags as well as anti-Semitic banners in the past.

It is about time for Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka to finally take the dangers arising from Islamists close to the Iranian regime serious. In Germany, the “Quds Day” organizers are under observation by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. Vienna’s mayor Michael Häupl, who recently visited Tehran while the regime’s Holocaust denial contest was still on-going, has apparently adopted a soft line of cozying up towards Iran’s Islamist regime and remains silent on this biggest regularly held anti-Semitic demonstration in Vienna.

A broad civil society alliance with the support of Members of Parliament Petra Bayr, Albert Steinhauser, Sigrid Maurer and Vienna City Council Members Peter Florianschütz and Peter Kraus says "No to Anti-Semitism!" and calls for counter-protests on Saturday, July 2nd, from 3pm at Bundesländerplatz/Mariahilfer Straße. Apart from STOP THE BOMB, the alliance is supported by Vienna’s Jewish Community, the Green Students, the Social Democratic LGBT Organization SoHo, the Kurdish Society for Education, Integration and Culture, as well as many Jewish, Christian and anti-Fascist groups.
